What "Taurus" actually means

Your sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun was passing through on the day you were born. Taurus is Venus in her earth expression. Where Venus in Libra is about balance between people, Venus in Taurus is about contact with the physical world: taste, texture, weight, warmth. This is the sign of the body's opinion, and the body's opinion is rarely in a hurry.

The mythology

The bull is most often read as Zeus in the myth of Europa, who took the form of a white bull, carried her across the sea, and gave his name to a continent. The older layer matters more: the Bull of Heaven in the Epic of Gilgamesh, and before that a Mesopotamian sky-bull whose rising marked the spring planting.

For roughly two thousand years, Taurus held the position Aries later took — the constellation the Sun rose in at the equinox. A great deal of bull imagery in the ancient Near East is a memory of that.

Common misreadings

"Taurus is lazy." Taurus is unhurried, which is different. The sign has one of the highest tolerances in the zodiac for long, boring, sustained effort. What it will not do is rush for no reason.

"Taurus is materialistic." The second house is about value, not price. Plenty of Taureans own very little and are fiercely particular about the quality of what they do own.

"Your sun sign is your personality." It is one factor. Your Moon, rising sign, Venus, and Mars can pull a chart a long way from the sun-sign stereotype.
