What "Scorpio" actually means

Your sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun was passing through on the day you were born. For Scorpio that is roughly October 23 to November 21, though the exact cutoff shifts by up to a day from year to year, so anyone born on the edge should check their birth time against a calculated chart rather than a calendar.

Scorpio's traditional ruler is Mars, which matters more than the modern literature suggests. Pluto, assigned as co-ruler only in the twentieth century, added the psychological and transformative vocabulary. The scorpion is the creature sent to kill Orion the hunter, who had boasted he could kill every animal on earth. Both were placed in the sky, and they are positioned so that Orion sets as Scorpius rises. They are never visible at the same time.

That arrangement is the sign's real image: a permanent pursuit that never resolves. Older Mesopotamian sky-lore had scorpion-people guarding the gates of the underworld and the mountain where the Sun rises. The association with thresholds is very old.

Common misreadings

"Scorpios are vengeful." Scorpio withdraws far more often than it retaliates. The disappearance is the response, and it is usually final.

"Scorpio is the sex sign." The eighth house covers intimacy in the broad sense: merging, dependency, shared money, mortality. Reducing it to sex loses most of the meaning.

"Your sun sign is your personality." It is one factor. Your Moon, rising sign, Venus, and Mars can pull a chart a long way from the sun-sign stereotype.
