What "Pisces" actually means

Your sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun was passing through on the day you were born. For Pisces that is roughly February 19 to March 20, though the exact cutoff shifts by up to a day from year to year, so anyone born on the edge should check their birth time against a calculated chart rather than a calendar.

Pisces closes winter, and closes the zodiac. Mutable signs end a season rather than announce the next, and the last sign carries traces of all eleven before it. Jupiter is the traditional ruler, which gives Pisces its generosity and reach; Neptune, the modern co-ruler, accounts for the imagination and the porousness.

The core traits, and the honest version of each

Empathic. Pisces picks up what other people are feeling without deciding to, and often without being able to tell whose feeling it is.

Imaginative. The interior world is unusually vivid. A large share of the best fiction, music, and film comes from this sign for a reason.

Adaptable. Mutable water takes the shape of its container, which is a real strength and the source of most of the sign's difficulties.

Compassionate. Pisces forgives more than is strictly sensible. The instinct is to see the reason behind the behaviour.

Escapist. When the outside world is too loud, Pisces leaves — into sleep, art, romance, or worse. Recognising the exit is half the work of the sign.

Boundaryless. The twelfth-house difficulty is knowing where you end. Pisces has to build boundaries deliberately, because none arrive by default.

Element and modality

The three water signs all process the world emotionally, but the modality splits them:

Cancer (cardinal water) initiates care and bonds. Scorpio (fixed water) holds and deepens them. Pisces (mutable water) dissolves the boundaries between them.

Mutable water is the least contained combination in the zodiac. Pisces merges with whatever it is near, which is why the company this sign keeps matters more for Pisces than for anyone else.

The natural house

Each sign has a natural house. Pisces takes the twelfth: the subconscious, solitude, retreat, and everything that operates out of sight. It sits opposite Virgo's sixth house of routine and visible work. Virgo sorts the material world, Pisces attends to the part of life that will not be sorted.

Compatibility, without the scorecard

Sun-sign compatibility is the shallowest layer of a real compatibility reading. A full synastry comparison weighs Moon, Venus, Mars, and the angles between two whole charts. With that caveat:

Cancer, Scorpio (water). Immediate recognition and no need to explain the emotional weather. The risk is that nobody in the room states the practical problem.
Taurus, Capricorn (earth). Earth gives Pisces edges. Some of the steadiest pairings in the zodiac, provided the earth sign does not mistake sensitivity for weakness.
Virgo (opposite sign). The magnetic pairing. Virgo sorts, Pisces dissolves the sorting. Each thinks the other is looking at the wrong thing, and both are learning something.
Gemini, Sagittarius (mutable). Two adaptable people, plenty of motion, and a shared difficulty holding any decision still.
Aquarius, Aries (neighbours). Different tempos. Aquarius wants the idea, Aries wants to move, Pisces wants to feel it out first. Workable with translation.

The mythology

The two fish are Aphrodite and Eros, who escaped the monster Typhon by taking fish form and tying themselves together with a cord so they would not be separated. The constellation still shows the two fish joined by a band, swimming in opposite directions.

That image is the sign in one picture: two pulls, permanently bound, going different ways. Babylonian sky-lore read the same stars as a swallow and a fish tied by a cord, associated with the end of the flood season.

Common misreadings

"Pisces is weak." Water wears down rock. This sign absorbs a great deal and keeps functioning, and the flexibility it is criticised for is what makes that possible.

"Pisces is unrealistic." The imagination is a working tool, not a defect. What Pisces does need is a system for handling the parts of life the imagination cannot do for it.

"Your sun sign is your personality." It is one factor. Your Moon, rising sign, Venus, and Mars can pull a chart a long way from the sun-sign stereotype.

If you were born on the cusp

Born February 17–20 or March 19–22? The Sun's sign change happens at a specific moment, not at midnight, and it moves year to year. There is no such thing as being half Pisces, half Aries. You are one or the other, and a calculated chart settles it in seconds.
