What "Libra" actually means

The Sun enters Libra at the autumn equinox, the second moment in the year when day and night are equal. A sign that begins at the point of exact balance, and whose symbol is a measuring instrument, is not really about being nice. It is about weighing.

Cardinal air makes Libra a starter of relationships, negotiations, and collaborations. The sign is far more driven than the peacekeeping stereotype suggests; the drive simply routes through other people.

The mythology

Libra is the only zodiac sign whose symbol is an object rather than a creature or a person, and the only one the Greeks did not originally recognise as separate. Its stars were the claws of the Scorpion; the Romans separated them out and made the scales.

The scales themselves are much older, and much heavier than the modern reading. In Egyptian belief the heart of the dead was weighed against the feather of Ma'at, cosmic order. Babylonian sky-lore associated the same stars with the judgement of the living. Libra's balance was originally a court, not a compromise.

Common misreadings

"Libras are people-pleasers." Libra optimises for fairness, not approval. Those look identical until an actual injustice appears, at which point they diverge sharply.

"Libras are vain." Venus rules aesthetics as a form of order. Attention to how things look is often attention to how things feel to be around.

"Your sun sign is your personality." It is one factor. Your Moon, rising sign, Venus, and Mars can pull a chart a long way from the sun-sign stereotype.
